Seismic hardware is the one package the special inspector reads piece by piece. Buy it fabricated to the stamped detail, tagged to the detail number, with the records the inspector will ask for.

Key takeaways
  • The scope is defined by the seismic engineer's stamped details; the fabricator builds to them and designs nothing.
  • Buy it as a detail-numbered schedule across electrical, mechanical and overhead systems, not trade by trade.
  • Qualify on plate and structural fabrication with weld and material records that match detail numbers.
  • Anchorage bases can ship with the equipment or the enclosures; decide which.

What you are buying

In seismic design categories, every piece of equipment and every overhead system needs engineered restraint: anchorage bases and plates under switchgear, UPS, PDU and battery lineups; rigid restraint frames at CDUs, pumps, tanks and skids; transverse and longitudinal braces on pipe, tray, busway and the overhead grid; battery-rack cross-bracing and tie-downs; and the gussets and attachment plates that tie all of it to the structure. The seismic engineer designs and stamps it. The hundreds of welded, galvanized or powder-coated parts on those details are fabrication.

Where it sits in the project

Developers and GCs buy the anchorage package with the equipment steel; electrical and mechanical contractors buy overhead bracing by the hundreds; equipment OEMs buy bases to ship with their lineups. Anchorage goes in with the equipment, bracing goes in with the services, and the special inspector signs off both, so documentation is part of the product.

What to put in the RFQ

Stamped detailsEvery seismic detail with its number, the equipment or system it applies to, and quantities
Equipment scheduleLineups and equipment with base dimensions, anchor patterns and weights
MaterialsPlate, angle, channel, HSS and strut grades per the details; anchor type and size
FinishGalvanized for exterior and damp; powder coat or primer for interior
ShippingWith the equipment, with the enclosures, or by area with the services
DocumentationMaterial certs, weld records, detail-number tags; CWI inspection where specified
TemplatesAnchor templates for bases where post-installed anchors are used

How to qualify a fabricator

  • Plate and structural fabrication. Laser-cut plates, welded frames and brace assemblies in one shop.
  • Records by detail number. Material and weld records that the special inspector can match to the drawing.
  • Conflict flagging. A fabricator who checks details against the real structure before cutting.
  • Equipment coordination. Bases that ship with the enclosures and racks the same fabricator builds.

Lead time, sequencing and delivery

Release anchorage bases with the equipment they restrain, early enough to ship with it or be on site before it. Release overhead bracing by area with the grid and the services. Every piece ships tagged to its detail number with its records.

Common mistakes

  • Asking the fabricator to design bracing. It is the seismic engineer's stamp, not the shop's.
  • Field-improvised braces. The inspector will not accept them.
  • Records in a binder, not on the part. Tag the detail number on the steel.
  • Bracing bought trade by trade. One schedule, one fabricator, one inspection package.

How FabTek supplies it

FabTek fabricates seismic bracing and equipment anchorage to stamped details at four plants in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, tagged by detail number with material and weld records, and ships it with the racks, skids, cabinets and overhead grid it restrains.

Frequently asked questions

Who designs seismic bracing for data center equipment?

A seismic or structural engineer designs and stamps the restraint details for the site's seismic design category. The fabricator builds to those details and does not design them.

What documentation does a special inspector need for seismic hardware?

Material certs, weld records and part identification that match the stamped detail numbers, plus the anchor type and installation records from the installer.

Can anchorage bases ship with the switchgear?

Yes. Bases for switchgear, UPS and battery lineups can ship with the enclosures and racks the fabricator builds, or to the OEM for installation under their equipment.

Who fabricates equipment anchorage frames for data centers?

FabTek Industries fabricates anchorage bases, restraint frames and brace assemblies at its Mississippi plants, tagged to the detail number, for developers, contractors and equipment OEMs.
