A transformer tank is more than the body. The cover carries the bushings, the pressure-relief device and the lifting points, and has to seal against the tank flange for the life of the unit. The conservator holds the oil expansion volume above the tank and connects through the Buchholz relay. Radiator headers, cable boxes, control cabinets, jacking pads and mounting brackets round out the assembly. OEMs often buy these separately from the tank body, on different schedules, from a fabricator who can hold the same flange patterns and the same finish.
FabTek fabricates covers, conservators and tank accessories to print at our Hazlehurst, Mississippi plants, alongside the corrugated, power, pad-mount and round tank bodies they belong to. Plate is laser cut and formed, flanges are machined flat, welds are made by certified welders and leak-tested where the drawing calls for it, and every piece goes through our in-house powder-coat line so the cover matches the tank.

Every oil-filled transformer from distribution pad-mounts to substation power units has a cover; conservator-type units add the expansion tank. Transformer OEMs buy covers and accessories to complete production tanks; transformer repair and remanufacturing shops buy replacement covers, conservators and cable boxes detailed to the unit on their floor; utilities and data center owners buy them through their OEM or service provider when a unit is rebuilt in place.

The failure mode on a cover is a flange that doesn't seal, and the usual cause is a cover and a tank that were made in two places to two interpretations of the same drawing. When FabTek fabricates both, the cover is machined to the actual tank flange, trial-fit and gasketed before either piece is painted, and the two ship together in the same color lot. When we fabricate the cover alone, we work from the OEM's flange pattern and can trial-fit against a supplied template.
