Haas VF-series and Hurco VMX42i vertical machining centers for the surfaces that have to be true — flange and gasket faces, bushing pads, base plates, precision hole patterns — machined on finished weldments and on parts to print.
A tank cover seals on a machined flange. A bushing sits on a machined pad. A pole stands on a base plate whose anchor-bolt pattern matches the foundation to a fraction of an inch. Those surfaces come off a vertical machining center, and at FabTek they come off one that sits beside the welding department so the part is machined after it is welded and true when it ships.
The milling cell runs Haas VF-series vertical machining centers and a Hurco VMX42i, programmed from the same models FabTek's engineering group details the fabrication in. Work ranges from facing a welded cover flange, to drilling and tapping a bolt pattern in a base plate, to milling pockets, slots and features in brackets and fittings. Manual mills and a Bridgeport handle secondary operations and one-off repair work.
Tank cover flanges, conservator flanges and cable-box faces machined flat on the finished weldment.
Bushing pads, gauge bosses and mounting pads faced and drilled to the OEM pattern.
Anchor-bolt and connection patterns drilled, bored and tapped to tolerance.
Pockets, slots, counterbores and features milled in fabricated and solid parts.
Welded assemblies fixtured and machined as a unit.
Parts milled to print for customers who need machined components alone.

Machined faces mate to bushings, headers and covers.

Transformer tank covers and conservators, power and pad-mount tank bushing pads, base plates for tubular poles and equipment stands, bus duct flanges and fittings, and conveyor drive and bearing mounts.

The failure a transformer OEM sees most from a tank supplier is a cover that doesn't seal, and the cause is almost always a flange that was flat before welding and isn't after. FabTek machines cover flanges on the VMC after the cover is welded and its stiffeners are on, so the face the gasket sees is the face the machine cut. Where FabTek builds both cover and tank, the two are trial-fit before paint. Our post on conservators, covers and tank accessories covers the rest of the assembly.
