Overview

Cylinders, rings and curves in plate.

Round transformer tanks, conservators and tube-cooled pole-mount tanks are cylinders; their top rings and flanges are rolled rings; radiator headers and some enclosure parts are rolled or curved sections. Rolling is the forming process that makes them, and it belongs beside the plate plasma and the welding cells so a rolled shell goes to seam welding without leaving the floor.

FabTek rolls tank shells and rings on a Lemas hydraulic three-roll plate bending roll — plate is pre-bent, rolled to diameter and checked against a template before the longitudinal seam is welded — and forms bar, angle and small sections on a hydraulic bender. Rolled shells feed the round tank and covers and conservators lines; rolled rings and curved sections feed tank, enclosure and structural work across the shop.

What We Build

What we fabricate.

  1. 01

    Round tank shells

Cylindrical shells for tube-cooled pole-mount tanks, regulator tanks and round distribution tanks.

  2. 02

    Conservator tanks

Rolled cylinders with welded ends for power transformer conservators.

  3. 03

    Rolled rings and flanges

Top rings, base rings and flanges for round tanks and cylindrical enclosures.

  4. 04

    Curved sections and cones

Radiator header pieces, transition cones and curved enclosure panels.

  5. 05

    Bent bar and angle

Curved angle, flat bar and small sections for structures, frames and guards.

How It Runs

From flat plate to welded shell.

  1. Plate cut to the developed length — Plate Rolling & Bending at FabTek Industries
    01

Plate cut to the developed length

Pre-bent at the ends so the seam closes round.

  2. Rolled on the Lemas — Plate Rolling & Bending at FabTek Industries
    02

    Rolled on the Lemas

Rolled to diameter and checked against a template.

  3. Seam welded in the fixture — Plate Rolling & Bending at FabTek Industries
    03

    Seam welded in the fixture

The longitudinal seam is welded with the shell held round.

  4. Into tanks and conservators — Plate Rolling & Bending at FabTek Industries
    04

    Into tanks and conservators

Shells feed the round tank and conservator lines.

Applications

Where rolled plate goes.

Round and pole-mount transformer tanks, conservators and covers, cylindrical enclosures and housings, and curved structural and conveyor parts. Rolled shells are welded, tube-cooled or finned on site and finished on the powder-coat line.

Why FabTek

Rolled to the seam, not just to size.

A rolled shell that is round to the tape but not round to the template gives the welder a seam that won't close and the fitter a cover that won't seat. FabTek pre-bends the leading and trailing edges, rolls to a diameter template and checks roundness before the seam is tacked, so the longitudinal weld closes without forcing and the top ring seats flat. On a tube-cooled tank that discipline is what keeps the tube bank fitting the shell — see round and pole-mount tanks.

Frequently Asked

Common questions.

What does FabTek roll?

Cylindrical shells for round transformer tanks and conservators, rolled rings and flanges, cones and curved sections, and bent bar and angle for structures and frames.

Which fabricators roll transformer tank shells and conservators?

FabTek Industries rolls tank shells on a three-roll plate bender and welds, fits and finishes the tanks at its Hazlehurst, Mississippi plants for transformer OEMs and repair shops.

Can you roll stainless or aluminum?

Yes, by request — most rolled work is carbon steel for tanks, but stainless and aluminum shells and rings can be rolled for enclosure and process applications.

Do you roll shells for customers who weld their own tanks?

Yes. Rolled and pre-bent shells and rings ship to print for customers who complete the tank in their own plant.
