Haas VF and Hurco VMX vertical machining centers and Hurco and Daewoo CNC lathes inside a fabrication plant — machined flanges, bushing pads, plates, bushings and fittings finished on the same floor as the tank, structure or cabinet they go into.
Most fabricated products have a few surfaces that have to be machined: a tank cover flange that must seal, a bushing pad that must be flat, a base plate with a precision hole pattern, a shaft or bushing in a conveyor drive. Sending those parts out means a second supplier, a second schedule and a fit-up that happens after the parts come back. FabTek machines them in-house, in a cell of CNC mills and lathes that sits beside the welding and finishing departments.
The cell runs Haas VF-series and Hurco VMX42i vertical machining centers for milling and Hurco TM10, Daewoo 230B and Sharp CNC lathes for turning, with manual mills, lathes and a Bridgeport for secondary and one-off work. Machining is scheduled with the fabrication it belongs to — a cover is machined after welding, before it is fitted to its tank — so tolerances are held on the finished weldment rather than on a part that will move when it is welded later.
Flange faces, bushing pads, gasket surfaces, base plates and precision hole patterns on Haas VF and Hurco VMX vertical machining centers.
Bushings, shafts, spacers, rollers, fittings and threaded parts on Hurco, Daewoo and Sharp CNC lathes.
Welded assemblies machined after welding so the finished surface is true.
Bosses, pads, flanges and fittings machined for tanks, cabinets, conveyors and structures.
Parts machined to print for customers who need them without the fabrication.

Tolerances held on the finished weldment, not a part that will move.

Flanges faced, patterns drilled and tapped, pockets and slots milled.

Shafts, rollers, bushings and fittings.

Checked, then fitted to the tank, structure or conveyor it belongs to.

Transformer tank covers, conservator flanges and bushing pads; conveyor shafts, rollers and bushings; base and connection plates for substation structures and tubular poles; fittings and bosses on enclosures and bus duct.

A cover flange machined flat and then welded to its stiffeners won't be flat when the weld cools. FabTek welds first and machines second — the cover is fabricated, stress-relieved where the drawing calls for it, and then its flange is machined on the VMC as a finished weldment. The same sequence applies to bushing pads, base plates and any surface that has to be true on the finished part. It is only practical when the machine shop and the welding shop are in the same building, which is the point of having one.
