NEMA 4 adds hose-directed water and windblown dust to the 3R requirements; NEMA 4X adds corrosion resistance on top. That means continuous gasketing, no drain holes, clamped or heavily latched doors, and either a corrosion-resistant material or a coating system proven in salt fog. Food and beverage plants, water and wastewater, chemical and petrochemical sites, coastal substations and Gulf Coast data centers all specify 4 or 4X for outdoor and washdown electrical equipment.
FabTek fabricates NEMA 4 and 4X enclosures to print at our Hazlehurst, Mississippi plants. 304 and 316 stainless welded to AWS D1.6 with seams ground and passivated in-house, aluminum 5052, or carbon steel under an in-house powder coat that carries an IEEE 2000-hour salt-spray rating. Continuous-pour or strip gasketing, stainless hardware, and door construction per the drawing. As with all our enclosures, we build to the rating you specify.

A 4X enclosure that rusts at the weld seams isn't 4X. Stainless has to be welded with the right filler, kept away from carbon-steel contamination on the floor, and the heat tint removed or passivated so the chromium oxide layer reforms. It can meet the corrosion requirement if the coating system passes the specified salt-spray test; our in-house powder coat is IEEE 2000-hour salt-spray rated. For the most severe environments, stainless is the safer specification.
