Shop-fabricated spools take most of a cooling plant's welding off the site, but only if the scope is split well and the fabricator gets the right package. Here is what that package looks like.

- Shop spooling moves the welds to a positioner under a roof and lets every spool be hydrotested before it ships.
- Agree the field-joint plan with the mechanical contractor first; it decides what is shop work and what is site work.
- Send isometrics, the piping spec, the inspection plan, the valve schedule and the delivery sequence; require weld maps, certs and test records back.
- Release the package by hall and ship the supports with the spools they carry.

Why spool in the shop
A hyperscale cooling plant carries tens of thousands of feet of chilled-water, condenser-water and technology-cooling pipe, much of it large-bore and stainless. Field welding it means scaffolds, fire watch, weather and a pipefitting crew competing for floor space with the electricians. Shop spooling moves the welds to a positioner under a roof, lets the fabricator hydrotest each spool before it ships, and turns installation into setting and bolting numbered assemblies at a handful of field joints.
Decide the split first
The spool package and the field package are defined by the field-joint plan: which joints the installing crew makes on site, which are shop welds. Good practice is to break spools at transportable lengths and weights, at equipment connections, and where the building structure forces a joint anyway. Flanged or grooved ends at the field joints cut site welding further. Agree the plan with the mechanical contractor before the fabricator cuts a single length.
What to send the fabricator
Isometrics with spool breaks marked; the piping specification (materials, schedules, end types, codes, test pressures); the inspection and test plan (what NDE, what percentage, who witnesses); the valve and specialty schedule if the fabricator is installing them; the finish and cleanliness spec; and the delivery sequence by area or hall. A fabricator who asks for these is the one you want.
What to require back
A spool list with tag numbers tied to the isometrics; a weld map per spool with welder IDs; material certs traceable to heat numbers; hydrotest records on calibrated gauges; dimensional inspection; and tagging that matches the installation drawings. Ask for WPS/PQR and welder qualification records up front — if they are not available in a day, keep looking.
Sequence to the halls
Spools for Hall 1 before Hall 1's chillers set, and nothing for Hall 4 in the laydown. Release the spool package by area, have the fabricator stage shipments to the construction schedule, and ship the supports with the spools they carry.
Where the manifolds and skids fit
Manifolds, headers and pre-piped skids are spool work with more nozzles and a frame. Sourcing them from the same shop as the spools keeps the material, the procedures and the test regime consistent, and removes a set of interfaces between suppliers.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pipe spool?
A pipe spool is a prefabricated section of piping, usually a straight run with fittings and flanged or grooved ends, cut and welded in a shop so it can be set and joined on site with a few field joints instead of being welded in place.
Which codes apply to data center cooling piping?
Chilled-water and technology-cooling piping is usually specified to ASME B31.1 or B31.3, with welders qualified to ASME Section IX and a hydrostatic test to 1.5 times design pressure. The project specification governs.
What should a pipe spool fabricator deliver with each spool?
A weld map with welder IDs, material certs traceable to heat numbers, a hydrotest record on calibrated gauges, dimensional inspection and a tag matching the isometric and the installation drawings.
Who fabricates pipe spools for data centers in the U.S.?
FabTek Industries fabricates chilled-water, condenser-water and liquid-cooling spools, manifolds and pre-piped skids at four plants in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, hydrotested and shipped sequenced by hall.
